About Villeroy:

“Villeroy,” a lovely, old estate home in the charming village of Greenfield Center just two miles from Saratoga Springs’ city limits. “Villeroy,” was built as a summer retreat by George Villeroy Watson, in 1863. Mr. Watson was a successful tobacco importer who resided in New York City. The mansion was reputed to have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, upwards to a million dollars, to build at the time. Mr. Watson enjoyed his summer home for many years.

After his death, Mr. Watson’s sister sold the estate to another wealthy financier from New York City. This gentleman, Mr. Robert M. McMullen, also spent many hundreds of thousands of dollars in expansions altering the estate to a new grandeur. Many of the materials used in the reconstruction of the mansion were imported from Europe and much of the ornamentation such as the stained glass windows and the hand-carved woodwork features are irreplaceable.

In the early 1930’s the house was listed for tax sale. The estate was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Dake in 1945 and then sold to Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Dake in 1953. The Dake families are owners of the Stewarts Shops in our tri-state region and additionally, home to the invention of America’s first, “Make Your Own Sundae.”

In 1972, the “Dake Mansion” was sold to Dr. and Mrs. Russell B. Peacock. Dr. Peacock had a thriving medical practice and was very active as the team doctor for the surrounding schools in the area. The Peacocks lived on “The Hill” for 31 years and raised their five children here.

In 2003, “The Hill” was sold to Captain and Mrs. Douglas K. Dupouy, U. S. Navy (Retired). Captain Dupouy flew F-14 fighter jets in the Navy for over 20 years and then went on to command the largest nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the U. S. Navy’s fleet…The USS Abraham Lincoln. The new land-lovers intend to restore their home to its former grandeur. Mrs. Dupouy operates The Etiquette School of New York from their home where children, adults, and business professionals gather to learn lessons of manners, social graces and proper protocols.

Villeroy will soon be able to host special events such as wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, opulent birthday parties, teas, company celebrations and small conferences. Our goal is to allow people to gather in a relaxing, elegant, private environment while creating life long memories. Please watch our website for upcoming information.
